Enrichment at Adirondog Vacations

When dogs stay with us, they aren’t in kennels — they’re part of our home. That means they get to stretch out, play, nap on the couch, or follow us into the kitchen just in case a snack falls. Enrichment is a big part of how we care for pups here. It keeps them happy, calm, and engaged, while giving you peace of mind that your dog is not only safe, but thriving.

Puzzle Feeders & Foraging

We’ve pretty much retired the traditional food bowl. Every meal is served in a puzzle, slow, or foraging feeder. We use favorites like the Snoop, KONG Wobbler, Qwizl, Toppl, lick mats, and snuffle mats.

Most dogs dive right in and love the challenge. Some look at us like, “Really? You expect me to work for kibble?” — and we adjust things for them. Either way, mealtime turns into a fun activity that keeps their brains busy.

Toys & Chews

We keep a rotation of durable toys from trusted brands like West Paw, KONG, Chuckit!, SodaPup, Benebone, Petstages, Outward Hound, Ruff Dawg, JW Pet, and Starmark.

Some toys are best for tug or fetch, others for chewing or problem-solving. We love watching dogs pick a favorite — sometimes it becomes “their” toy for the whole stay.

Special Treats

With your permission, we also offer long-lasting chews like bully sticks, pig ears, collagen chews, cow hooves, and our homemade organic dehydrated sweet potato slices (always a hit!). On hot days, we pull out a frozen peanut butter bone — part snack, part project, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Walks & Local Adventures

We’re lucky to live right at the base of Mount Baker, beside the Pines trail network, and just steps from Moody Pond. Walks can be easy neighborhood sniff-sessions or short Adirondack hikes. For your dog, it’s not just exercise — it’s a chance to catch up on the local “pee-mail.”

Agility & Nose Work

One of our dogs enjoys agility (spoiler alert, not Cedar), so we keep equipment on hand. Visiting dogs can give it a try — weaving poles, hopping jumps, or, let’s be honest, just peeing on it like it’s a deluxe fire hydrant.

We also love running scent games like “find it” or hiding treats in snuffle mats. Sniffing is one of the best natural stress relievers, and dogs light up when they succeed.

Calming, Rest & Comforts

Downtime matters too. We use calming scents and “dog music” to help pups relax during fireworks or storms. For naps, dogs can choose from orthopedic memory foam beds, heated beds, soft blankets, our recliner, or the couch. On movie nights, it’s normal to have dogs stretched across the sofa beside us (or right on top of us).

Social & One-on-One Time

Some dogs thrive with playmates, while others prefer people. We supervise all group play to keep things safe, and we make sure every dog gets personal time — whether that’s cuddles, brushing, or just following us around while we make coffee.

Our Philosophy

Every dog is different. Some are adventurers, some are puzzle-solvers, and some are couch potatoes who love belly rubs and TV time. Our job is to make sure each dog feels at home and gets the right kind of enrichment — so their stay here feels like their very own Adirondack vacation.
